How to Get To Know Yourself

How to Get To Know Yourself

If you are not sure and knowledgeable about who you are. You’re going to be mentally drained and literally dragged left and right by other people telling you who you are. I talk to quite a few people who can’t precisely nor quickly tell me, seemingly simple things about themselves. It’s not because they don’t have the capacity or ability to. It’s because they’ve never really sat down to do the work, nor took the time to search themselves to find out.

I’d like to challenge you. I want you to get out of your comfort zone, ignore the fear of self-inflicted pain and self-imposed rejection and start writing a book. I want you to write YOUR book. I want you to write The Book of (insert your name here). You don’t have to have anything in order by chapter or any of that fluff. You just need to write. I want you to authentically in a raw and real way begin to explore and get to know YOU!

You don’t have to do anything perfect in this book. You just need to do three simple things. I want you to ask, seek, and answer. Yes, that’s it. In this specific order -- ask, seek, and answer!

Ask

I want you to ask yourself questions about you, your behaviors, your dreams, your fears, your history; everything. Don’t hold back in this department. You need to be extremely curious here. Exceed the ordinary and the surface level. You need to ask questions as if you are in a relationship with someone that you will spend the rest of your life with. Because spoiler alert, you are in a relationship with someone you are going to spend the rest of your life with and it’s time for you to stop focking around and REALLY get to know them. I'm talking about you kinfolk! An example ask would be, "why do I feel this way when someone says this to me? Why does this trigger me so bad?"

Seek

The next thing you need to do is seek. Once you’ve asked yourself the question, you need to go in search of, digging to the deepest depths and discover everything about you as it pertains to the question at hand. One thing I’ve learned on my own journey is the invaluable importance of getting to the root of a matter. If you can’t get to the root of a matter, you’ll never be able to master it. Of course, some seeking won’t take long at all. You’ll find that you can easily move towards an answer. Yet, there are other situations where you’ll ask the question and as you begin to seek, you’ve got to ponder; meditate on it for days, maybe even weeks. Don’t move from this step until you have gone through it all and you’ve been brutally honest with yourself about everything you found while digging and discovering.

Answer

Lastly, it’s time to answer and when I say answer, I mean brutally honestly answer! Don’t sugar coat the shiggity or anything like that. Get out of your feelings, move past the emotional paralysis and answer your ask! You need to answer your ask like your life depends on it because it does. You have time and you DON’T have time to get to know yourself. Getting to know yourself is the priority of your life in this moment. No other relationship in your life, whether intimate or platonic will be healthy and effective nor will it survive if you don’t get to truthfully know – you.

Don't ask, seek, and answer and walk away. Get in your book often. Continue to explore everything you put in it so that it all abides in you. It all needs to be a part of every fabric of your being.

I hope your book helps you as much as mine is helping and has helped me over the years. As you move through this part of your journey, I’d love to know how it’s going for you. Feel free to holla at me in some form or fashion. I want to continue to push you towards this important space on your journey. Bless Up!
