The alarm sounds and it's time to get up and get your day started. You went to bed at a decent time, you got enough hours of rest and now it's time to put your feet on the floor and get the day going!
Leave the Phone Alone
Most of us are staring at our phones as soon as we wake up, while we're getting ready for school and work, while we're on our way to school and work. We're doing it on the job, in the classroom, in the restroom and anywhere else we need to fill any blank or dead space in our day. We unfortunately don't leave ourselves much time for nothingness and relaxation.
With this much screen time and over-stimulation, it's no wonder we're an overly anxious, highly irritated, and grossly distracted people.
There are two times of the day that are beneficial to shut down your phone or the notifications on your phone. Those times are before you retire to bed for sleep and especially when you awake in the morning.
The first thing you want to do when you awake is regulate your nervous system, mind, and inner spirit. Not grab your phone and immediately partake in overindulging shots of dopamine and stimulation.
Take Time to Breathe Slow and Get Quiet
A constant practice of slow breathing has been shown to decrease the effects of stress and has been advocated for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Find a space where you can sit, close your eyes or keep them open, but be sure that you can remain quiet and will not be distracted as you begin this practice.
Start your slow breathing exercise by slowly inhaling for 4 seconds, filling up your lungs as much as you can, then rest on the 5 second holding the breath in. Then, immediately exhale for 4 seconds, being sure to release all of the air you've taken in and rest on the 5th second. Repeat this process for at least 11 repetitions. Make sure your form is smooth and not choppy. If it is choppy, you will find that it is hard to catch your breath and making it difficult to breathe and feel comfortable while performing the steps.
Focus on envisioning yourself having a great and productive day. See yourself in your day being present, aware, mindful, productive, and taking care of business. Once you have completed this exercise, don't grab your phone and begin to scroll. Fight the urge to scroll. You can do it!
Speak Good Over Your Day
The overwhelming positive results of positive speech is everywhere. This works in our favor considering how imperative this portion of the exercise is for us to put into practice.
As you've completed your slow breathing and getting quiet exercise, it is now time to employ some positive speaking to precede you in the atmosphere of your day. Just as there is a tangible world where we can see ideas and thoughts that have come to fruition; there's also an intangible world where our words can flow and plant the seeds of what we expect to harvest during the day.
Speak good things over yourself and your day. Make sure you are speaking things that will motivate you to remain positive and help you keep a positive outlook on your day. Here are a few affirmations to get you started:
1. Today I will have a great day!
2. Divine favor will precede me and overtake me wherever I go!
3. I am successful in all of my endeavors today!
Now that you've been given 3 sound ways to set the atmosphere for your day, and you understand how to properly set the atmosphere for your day, we encourage you to try this for at least two weeks to see how things improve for you and we believe your days will be better than ever before and you'll find yourself repeating this practice every day!
